CVS Health Workforce Initiative

Each year the CVS Health WorkForce Initiatives program selects one student from each of the 5 WorkAbility 1 regions in California to receive the Student Award of Excellence in recognition of their participation in a work experience opportunity at a CVS Health store.  This is the fourth consecutive year that a student from San Marcos Unified School District’s WorkAbility 1 Region V program has won this award.

Angel Gonzalez, who graduated from San Marcos High School last June, was nominated and chosen to receive the 2016 award.  In an award ceremony at the CVS Health store at 734 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road where Angel completed his work experience, Angel received a framed certificate and a check in the sum of $200 which he plans to put toward his studies at MiraCosta College.

Angel worked at the CVS Health store at 734 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, San Marcos during the spring semester of his senior year.  Angel received a perfect evaluation at the conclusion of his work experience and the store manager, Lou Rugari, encouraged Angel to apply for a permanent position when he graduated.  Angel was hired in the fall of 2015 and has worked at the store full time since then.  Lou saw great potential for Angel and began train him for a supervisory position.  When a position became available for Angel at another San Marcos CVS Health store, Lou encouraged Angel to accept the position and make a transfer.  Angel is now furthering his career as a supervisor at the Twin Oaks Valley Road store.

Angel credits the WorkAbility program and CVS Health with providing valuable work experience and training and assisting him in gaining in confidence and maturity as he learned how to provide excellent customer service and work with his manager, supervisors and peers.

CVS Health entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with California’s WorkAbility 1 program in February of 2009.  Through this initiative, numerous students throughout California have started out on a path to a better and more productive adult life.  CVS Health are our largest business partners in San Marcos and provide work experience opportunities for our students at all five of their San Marcos stores allowing us a diversity of locations that meet the needs of students throughout the city.  To date, our San Marcos CVS Health store partners have provided work experiences for 117 San Marcos students!
