Community Update Following Special Board Meeting

Community update regarding our return to in-person learning

January 12, 2021

Good Afternoon SMUSD Families,

We are happy to welcome our families back to school this week! If your child is currently enrolled in the virtual program (LEVS), you may disregard this message.

Last night, the SMUSD Governing Board held a special meeting to discuss school reopening plans in light of the continuing surge of COVID-19 within San Diego County.

Please review the following highlights below:

-Per the Board’s decision in late December, school sites will remain closed for all but essential functions until January 25th.

-Our return to in-person learning schedule has been modified to the following:

-Returning to in-person January 26th

  • PK, TK, K, 1
  • Elementary and Secondary specialized special education programs
  • Small cohorts at middle and high school
  • Athletics (January 25th)

-Elementary grades 2-5 will remain in remote instruction

  • The Board will revisit a revised return date for students in grades 2-5 at their regularly scheduled Governing Board meeting on January 19th

-Secondary grades 6-12 will remain in remote instruction

  -Additional items from the meeting

-Per Board request, families that are currently enrolled in the hybrid model at grades PK-1 will have a final opportunity to express their interest in moving to virtual instruction (LEVS) for the remainder of the year. The results of this survey will allow us to determine if we are able to open additional districtwide virtual classes at these grade levels. Families at these grade levels will receive an email today with more information.

-Per Board request, we are exploring options to expand our small cohorts at the secondary level with an emphasis on returning seniors to campus in some capacity. This will be discussed in greater detail on January 19th.

We will continue to update you as more information becomes available and decisions are made. As always, we thank our families for their continued support and flexibility in these most uncertain of times.
