Spencer Wavra, Ed.D.






Spencer Wavra, Ed.D. 
Director, Special Programs

With over twenty years in the field of public education, Dr. Spencer Wavra has both teaching and administrative experience at the elementary, secondary, and county levels. Beginning his career as a middle school Social Studies and Special Education teacher, he has held numerous site and district leadership positions, including Assistant Principal, Principal, and Director of Special Education. Most recently, Dr. Wavra served as the Principal of San Marcos Middle School from 2017 to 2021.

As a proud San Marcos Unified School District parent and community member, Dr. Wavra holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the University of Redlands, as well as a Master of Arts and Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University.

Administrator for K-12 EL Students

Patricia Kurylo has worked in the San Marcos Unified School District for the past 35 years. She graduated from San Diego State University with her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Bilingual Curriculum and Instruction. She taught third and fifth grades for five years at San Marcos Elementary, and then she moved to Paloma Elementary and taught sixth grade for seven years. She went on to become a Teacher on Special Assignment as the Woodland Park Middle School Community Reading Intervention Teacher and then she became the Assistant Principal at WPMS, where she remained for sixteen years. She then transitioned to San Elijo Middle School and served as Assistant Principal for five years. Ms. Kurylo is now the Administrator for the K-12 SMUSD English Learners. She works with English Learners and their families to promote students in their English language development with the hope that students will leave SMUSD as multilingual students heading into their college and careers.
