Posted on 05/17/2022

On May 17th, SMUSD was honored at the School Counseling Leadership Event hosted by the San Diego County Office of Education. San Marcos was a stand out amongst districts from across the region, as several of our team members were recognized for excellence in school counseling, including:

Lezya Weglarz, MTSS Coordinator, was a featured speaker and celebrated for her work in the Mentorship Program for New School Counselors.

SMUSD was also recognized for placing #1 as the Race to Submit Champion for districts of our size. This recognition highlights the work of counseling teams in our district to help students understand and apply for financial aid, a critical step in receiving aid to pay for college.

SMUSD’s 2021 Counselor of the Year, Cherryl Baker of Mission Hills High School, was honored for her outstanding dedication to students.

To top off the event, SMUSD received a surprise award as Ruben Escobar, San Marcos High School Counselor, was presented with the Frank Jonasson Endowment Award for going above and beyond the call of duty in preparing high school students for higher education.
