Internships

San Marcos Unified School District offers exceptional internship opportunities that are seamlessly integrated into various courses, providing students with invaluable hands-on experience in their chosen fields.

At Mission Hills High School, students enrolled in Careers in Education and Child Development courses gain practical experience within our own district classrooms, working with preschool and elementary school students. This immersive opportunity allows them to understand the dynamics of the classroom setting and develop essential teaching skills.

At San Marcos High School, Careers in Education classes collaborate closely with La Mirada Academy, where students engage with both the students and staff, gaining insights into various roles within the education sector. This partnership provides a comprehensive understanding of educational careers, from classroom teaching to administrative functions.

Both high schools also offer Health Essentials 2 classes, designed for students interested in healthcare careers. These classes provide placements in diverse healthcare settings, including dental, medical, veterinary, and physical therapy offices, as well as hospitals. Students experience the daily responsibilities and specialized skills required in these fields, preparing them for future careers in healthcare.

Additionally, the district offers an Internship course that enables students to work with teachers to secure internships in their field of choice. This course allows students to experience the myriad benefits of internships, which include:

  1. Gaining Valuable Work Experience: Internships offer hands-on work experience that cannot be obtained in a classroom setting. Students apply their knowledge to real-world situations, gaining insights into the daily job duties they can expect in their chosen field. Alongside specialized skills, they also acquire transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and computer proficiency, fully preparing them for the workforce.
  2. Exploring a Career Path: Internships allow students to explore their desired field, helping them determine if it is the right fit for them. This exploration is a crucial part of the learning experience, providing clarity and direction for their future career choices.
  3. Gaining an Edge in the Job Market: Internship experience makes high school students more marketable, as they usually require less training and can handle more responsibilities. This experience often leads to higher starting salaries compared to peers without internship experience. Internships also provide unique learning opportunities, offering feedback from supervisors and professionals established in the field. This feedback helps students embrace mistakes, ask questions, observe, and take risks, maximizing their internship training experience.
