San Marcos Elementary recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Schools

San Marcos, CA — September 26, 2025 — San Marcos Elementary School has been recognized as one of the nation’s healthiest schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a national children’s health organization committed to advancing equitable, healthy schools.
The school earned a spot on Healthier Generation’s 2025 list of America’s Healthiest Schools under the topic area of Staff Well-Being, highlighting the school’s commitment to supporting the physical and mental wellness of its educators and staff.
San Marcos Elementary was recognized for its dedicated staff wellness and exercise room, a space designed to promote healthy habits, reduce stress, and encourage movement throughout the school day. The initiative reflects the school’s belief that when educators feel their best, they can better support the academic and social-emotional success of every student.
“This recognition is a testament to the culture of care and wellness that our staff has built together,” said Christine Griley, principal of San Marcos Elementary School. “We’re proud to create an environment where staff well-being is prioritized right alongside student learning.”
Superintendent Dr. Andy Johnsen praised the school’s efforts as an example of SMUSD’s broader commitment to supporting both students and staff. “At San Marcos Unified, we believe that thriving schools begin with thriving people,” said Dr. Johnsen. “San Marcos Elementary’s focus on staff wellness exemplifies the compassion, innovation, and dedication that make our district such a special place to learn and work.”
The America’s Healthiest Schools recognition is one of the nation’s longest-running, evidence-based honors for schools that demonstrate a commitment to promoting the physical, mental, and social-emotional health of students and staff. Schools are evaluated across nine topic areas, including family engagement, physical education, nutrition, and staff well-being.
